BICAL (grape variety) The local hero grape from Bairrada: thanks to its crisp acidity, it is ideal for lively sparkling wines, but is also always welcome as a blending partner for the more aromatic Maria Gomes. Loosely translated, the name means ‘sourpuss’, which, however, does not do this wonderful grape justice.
The early-ripening Bical brings its own light notes of stone fruit and tropical fruit to the table and is also excellent when aged in wooden barrels (not only oak, but also chestnut, as Bairrada legend Luis Pato proves with his Vinha Formal). Genetic analyses reveal a kinship with Malvasia Fina from the neighbouring Dão region, where Bical also enjoys great popularity amongst winegrowers, though it tends to be overshadowed by Encruzado.
Its freshness makes it a wonderful accompaniment to seafood.
