In the extreme north-east of Portugal lies the region Tras-os-Montes (portug. = behind the mountains) with the DOPs Chaves in the west north, Valpaços in the centre and Planalto Mirandes in the east. There are dry and hot summers, whereas the winters are often frosty. Regional wines are labelled as Transmontano.
