Carcavelos

Viticulture in Carcavelos has been on record for well over half a millennium, and in the 18th century the fortified wines were held in high regard in London, St. Petersburg and even North America. However, when Carcavelos was officially granted the status of a Região Demarcada in 1908, the struggle for survival of Portugal's smallest wine-growing region in terms of area had already begun: Phylloxera on the one hand and the progressive urbanization of the Lisbon metropolitan region on the other threatened local production on several occasions. However, the 1980s brought a turnaround. This was mainly thanks to the municipal administration of Oeiras, which campaigned for the preservation of the vineyards - with success. In 1997, the Casal da Manteiga was restored as a winery, and in 2012, the municipality restored the Palácio do Marques de Pombal and its garden. Both sites are open to interested visitors.
