‘Why Portuguese wine?’ is a question we are often asked by new customers – and rightly so! In that case we fortunately have two answers ready. First of all, it simply happened with specialisation. When Karsten Kubin founded the ‘Weingalerie’ in 1986, he took over the stock of a predecessor, which was already very Lusophile. Thus, the focus on Portugal as a wine country came about naturally.
For almost four decades, the name suffix ‘Wines from PORTugal’ has been part of the program, and co-owner Ruth Lindenblatt has been on board for almost as long. And this is based on conviction, which brings us to the second possible answer to the crucial question: ‘Why Portugal?’ The answer lies in the sheer diversity that this small country at the western end of Europe has to offer. With almost 300 indigenous grape varieties and highly diverse terroirs. From the granite-dominated Vinho Verde to the slate terraces of the Douro. From the mountainous plateaus in the hinterland to the Atlantic coast and further south to the warm Alentejo and sunny Algarve: Portugal offers wines for every season and every occasion; in every colour, from light to fullbodied; for toasting, celebrating and reminiscing.
From the very beginning, the ‘Weingalerie’ has been closely linked to Berlin's Charlottenburg district. The first location on Sybelstraße was followed in 2001 by a move to Pestalozzistraße 55 near Lietzensee. Now in our fortieth year, we are still driven by curiosity to discover Portugal's most exciting wines and share our enthusiasm with you. Whether in our shop or in our online store.
With this in mind: Cheers – à saúde!
