Douro Meandro Tinto 2023 Quinta do Vale Meão
The entry-level red wine from Quinta do Vale Meão, near the Spanish border. The Douro River forms a loop here with many little slopes, ‘meandering’ around the Olozabal family’s estate, hence the name Meandro. The local vineyards feature three different soil types concentrated within a very small area: alluvial, granite and schist. Mostly Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz have been grown here as single-varietal wines for a long time, at an altitude of 150 metres.
Traditionally, each grape variety in the blend for the Meandro Tinto is fermented separately, then aged for 14 months in two- and three-year-old barriques. Plenty of red fruit, floral notes and fresh minerality.
Due to early hail and late rain shortly before the harvest, the yield at Quinta do Vale Meão in 2023 was lower. The winemakers, however, rate the quality as exceptional. It will certainly keep for a further ten years.

Quinta do Vale Meão
5150-501 Vila Nova de Foz Côa
PORTUGAL
When the grande dame of port, Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, acquired an impressive 300 hectares near the Spanish border in 1877, she laid the foundation for one of the most exciting quintas Portugal has to offer. North of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, the Douro River meanders, creating three different soil formations: stony alluvial, granite and slate combine to form a unique terroir covering 98 hectares of cultivated land. Since 1998, Dona Antónias great-great-grandson Francisco de Olazabal and his son of the same name have been producing outstanding quality wines here. The red grapes ripen in individual plots, are fermented separately and then blended into cuvées. The single-varietal tintos from Monte Meão also impress with their concentration and extraordinary elegance.
