NEGRA MOLE (grape variety) It was the Phoenicians, who were extremely active throughout the Mediterranean region, who brought the first vines to Portugal 2,500 years ago, to the area that is now the Algarve – long before the Romans, centuries later, spread viticulture far to the north.
Today, the Negra Mole is considered Portugal’s oldest grape variety. On Madeira it is called Tinta Negra. Unlike the other white grape varieties on the Atlantic island, it is mostly used for entry level fortified wines and is popular with growers due to its high yield. But it with some ageing it is also possible to produce premium quality wines.
As a red grape variety, the Negra Mole produces fresh, summery reds with a delicate sour cherry note, which are also wonderful when served slightly chilled. Light-bodied, with fine acidity and gentle tannins.
