In Estremoz, im Norden des Alentejo, gelegen, wird auf dem Anwesen seit mehr als 150 Jahren Wein produziert. 1988 begann Júlio Bastos seine Weine zu vermarkten und ging 1992 ein Joint Venture mit der Familie Rothschild ein. Zur Jahrtausendwende verkaufte er seine Anteile und brachte nach dem Erwerb neuer, geeigneter Weinberge 2003 die erste Ernte seines neuen Projekts ein. Diese wurde im restaurierten und erweiterten Weinkeller des Gutes ausgebaut. Vom Start weg erfuhren die Dona Maria Weine bei Genießern und Kritikern große Anerkennung.
