What began in 1958 as an association of 25 winegrowers has grown six decades later into a network of over 1,700 associated producers. Today, the Adega Cooperativa Regional de Monção exports its Vinhos Verdes to four continents. The local sub-region of Monção & Melgaço is undoubtedly considered the heartland of the white Alvarinho grape. However, light, sparkling reds from Alvarelhão, Pedral and Vinhão are also produced in the far north-west of Portugal.
