Dow's Port
J. da Silva and William
Cosens, Portuguese and English, remain the namesakes of this shipper
to this day. The brand name ‘Dow's’, under which the wines of
Silva & Cosens are known, resulted from the merger with ‘Dow &
Co.’ in 1877. Long before other shippers, the company bought its
own vineyards in the Douro region: Quinta do Zimbro in 1887, Quinta
da Senhora da Ribeira in 1890 and Quinta do Bomfim in 1896. In 1912,
Andrew James Symington joined the company, which is now completely
owned by the Symingtons and managed by them for now four
generation.
Dow's ports are generally less sweet than those of
other producers. The Vintages are characterized by sweet, berry
flavors with a strong, sometimes indescribable tannin structure. They
are very long-lasting and are among the best vintage ports.
