The Serra do Mendro plateau rises up to 400 metres above sea level in the heart of the Alentejo. Clay and slate soils characterise the microclimate, which is cooler than in most parts of the South. The Herdade Aldeia de Cima is surrounded by cork oak forests. The Tinto Reserva is a sophisticated cuvée in which each grape variety is vinified separately: Alicante Bouschet for 1 year in used barriques; Trincadeira in 150-litre terracotta barrels; Aragonês (= Tempranillo) in cement tanks; Alfrocheiro in 1000-litre amphorae. The result is an elegant Tinto Alentejano, not too fruity, with a fine flavour and supple tannin structure.
