Baga from Bairrada: Luís Pato Vinhas Velhas Tinto 2023
Vinhas Velhas are old vines, around 40 years old, which thrive on the classic clay and limestone soils of Bairrada. Since 1988, Luís Pato has been pressing this wine from Baga, the distinctive signature grape of this region near the Atlantic. Fermented for 10 days in steel tanks, then aged for 20 months in used 650-litre Allier barrels. Lighter in alcohol content, with full fruit and many earthy aromas. With enormous ageing potential of easily three decades, during which elegance and finesse steadily increase.

The Pato family has been producing wines in Bairrada since the 18th century. Luis Pato pressed his first wine in 1980 and has since become a pioneer in the region and the undisputed master of the Baga grape. Many innovations can be traced back to him: destemming Baga grapes, aging in French oak, planting ungrafted vines, and so on... Today, Luis Pato has 60 hectares of vineyards on sandy and loamy-calcareous soils south and west of Sangalhos. “For us, producing wine is not only a passion, but also a pleasure.”
