Conceito Bastardo Douro Red Wine 2022

Bastardo is the Portuguese synonym from the grape Trousseau that originates from the french region Jura. In Douro its used in Portwines, but is also known to make elegant red wines with Cherry notes and high acidity. Conceito makes a low intervention version of Bastardo, and shows the dark colored grape in a very elegant shape. The grapes used in this wine is from a 40 years old vinyards on slate soil, named Quinta do Cabido and Quinta Chao do Pereiro.

The grapes are harvested per hand, and brought back to the winery directly after. Here the grapes are foot-trodden in big granite "Lagares", with no destemming and no added yeast. After the fermentation the wine ages for 10 months in stainless steel tanks.

Bastardo has a very expressive nose, with fresh acidic cherrys and a little earthy undertone to it. Deep dark rubin colour, with a nice and relatively elegant body. This wine shows the potential of the Bastardo grape in Douro's warm climate, and practises this single grape varities silky elegance in a region with a majority of more powerfull reds.
