The Castelão is one of Portugal's most characteristic tinto grapes: full, dark fruit, notes of cassis and cocoa, mint and a slight leatheriness. It has its heartland around the town of Palmela on the Setúbal peninsula, where it was long known under the synonym "Periquita", named after the Fonseca wine of the same name. When planting the old vineyard, the Cardosos once cheated a few other vines into the rows, giving their Reserva that certain something. Matured for 14 months in French barriques and can be kept for a long time. A wonderful companion for roasts and barbecues.

In mittlerweile vierter Generation leitet Filipe Cardoso die Quinta do Piloto auf der Halbinsel Setúbal, im Süden Lissabons. Unfern der Kreisstadt Palmela, die der für ihre Castelão-Tintos berühmten DOC den Namen leiht, richtete Filipe das Familienunternehmen 2008 neu aus. Frische und Eleganz sind die Kardinaltugenden dieses Weinmachers, der seine verrückte Seite wiederum mit der hauseigenen Kamikaze-Linie auslebt. Die süßen Moscatels hingegen, Klassiker der Region, wissen durch außerordentliche Finesse zu überzeugen.
