In Portuguese, Aguardente is used to describe distillates - usually with an alcohol content of between 40 and 50 percent by volume - that are distilled from wine (Aguardente Vinica), pomace (Aguardente Bagaceira) or other fruits. The word „aguardente" is composed of „agua" (water) and „ardente" (burning).

Olive oil, which is often of very high quality and is consumed in large quantities in the country, is little known outside Portugal.
