Let's be honest: we in Central Europe have Müller-Thurgau, which is all well and good, but how does that compare to Maria Gomes? At least, that's what the white grape with its unmistakable floral profile is called in Bairrada. (The fact that a few kilometres further south it suddenly changes gender and goes by the name Fernão Pires should not bother us at this point.) The sandy soils near Coimbra, close to the Atlantic, are clearly good for the aromatic Maria Gomes with its relatively mild acidity. Fresh, medium-bodied, wonderful with fish and seafood or simply on its own in good company.

The Pato family has been producing wines in Bairrada since the 18th century. Luis Pato pressed his first wine in 1980 and has since become a pioneer in the region and the undisputed master of the Baga grape. Many innovations can be traced back to him: destemming Baga grapes, aging in French oak, planting ungrafted vines, and so on... Today, Luis Pato has 60 hectares of vineyards on sandy and loamy-calcareous soils south and west of Sangalhos. “For us, producing wine is not only a passion, but also a pleasure.”
