Vinho Verde Sem Mal 2021 – the authentic taste of Portugal's far north
Sem Mal is Sem Iguals version of the traditional Vinho Verde wine type, that is a slightly sparkling white. Made with a blend of 70% Azal and 30% Arinto, the grapes are harvested per hand, and are pressed straight after harvest. Then the wine goes through an alcoholic fermentation, before aging for 3 months in steel vats. After the aging the wine is bottled with the lees, and the bottle ages for an additional year. This process is what makes this wine very unique. In the wine that is transferred to the bottle is unfiltered, and therefore you still have all the lactic bacteria, and now a malolatic fermentation can take place in the bottle. This process does not only develop more flavor notes, it also creates co2 and thereby makes the wine slightly sparkling. Very fresh and light sparkling, with intense acidity and well refined citrus notes. High minerality, almost like small salt crystals, with a smooth body and medium deep color. A must try for Vinho Verde fans, and curious wine tasters.

Gut 30 Minuten nördlich von Porto liegt das Weingut Sem Igual, was soviel bedeutet wie „ohne Gleichen“. Vinho Verde war einst ein ursprüngliches und authentisches Produkt, dessen Qualität dank des unstillbaren Durstes der Hypermärkte langsam durch industrielle Massenproduktion nivelliert wurde. Dabei zählt authentischer Vinho Verde zur Gattung der erfrischenden, knackigen Weissweine, ein relativ elitärer Club mit nur wenigen Mitgliedern. Sein Name, der grüne Wein, bezieht sich auf seine Spritzigkeit und nicht auf seine Farbe. Heute werden unter dem Label Vinho Verde sowohl Rot-, Rosé- und Weissweine sowie Schaum- und Perlweine, Trester und Essig vermarktet. Historisch gesehen ist die Heimat des Vinho Verde jedoch eine Rotweinregion, die sich erst im Laufe der letzten 50 Jahre zu einem Weisswein-Gebiet gewandelt hat.
Die Familie von João Camizão betreibt bereits seit dem 18 Jahrhundert Weinbau, die Linie Sem Igual als Dinstinktions-Modell existiert seit 2012. Nach einer Karriere im Telekommunikationsbereich schien es João an der Zeit, zurück zu den Wurzeln der Familie und des ursprünglichen Weines zu kehren. Gelegen in den Sub-Regionen Sousa und Amarante wachsen die Trauben für die knochentrockenen Rachenputzer der Sem Igual Weine aus 70% Azal und 30% Arinto an bis zu 70 Jahre alten Reben auf Granit.
