Wine from Dão

The region around the rivers Dão, Mondego and Alva - in the centre of northern Portugal - is considered the cradle of Portuguese viticulture and birthplace of the country's most important red grape variety: the Touriga Nacional. The landscape is hilly and characterised by granite, the vineyards are mostly small and surrounded by forests. Three mountain ranges protect the region from Atlantic influences in the west and the mighty Serra da Estrela in the east from Iberian influences.
