The region around the rivers Dão, Mondego and Alva - in the centre of northern Portugal - is considered the cradle of Portuguese viticulture and birthplace of the country's most important red grape variety: the Touriga Nacional. The landscape is hilly and characterised by granite, the vineyards are mostly small and surrounded by forests.
