Luis Pato Rebel Baga 2021 Red Wine Bairrada
Luis Pato is possibly the most famous winemaker in the Bairrada region, and among the most famous in Portugal. He is particually known for his work with the Baga grape, and always experimenting with it. On that note the Rebel is one of he's attempts to bring forth a more elegant, and early drinkable light redwine from the Baga grape.
The Rebel is a blend consisting of 80% Baga and 20% of the grape Bical. This type of wine mixing red grapes with a small amount of white grapes, would normally in Portugal be reffered to as a so called "Palhete". The grapes are harvested from different plots, and are mixed for the fermentation. Afterwards it ages in stainless steel tanks before botteling.
A light bodied wine with a deep rubin red color. Aromas from fresh red forrest berries, Raspberries and Blackberries, and with a touch of green tea and dark chocolate in the end. A interesting take on the Baga grape, with a nice balance between body and acidity. Perfect as a meditation wine, to drink on the terrace, or with grilled meats.

The Pato family has been producing wines in Bairrada since the 18th century. Luis Pato pressed his first wine in 1980 and has since become a pioneer in the region and the undisputed master of the Baga grape. Many innovations can be traced back to him: destemming Baga grapes, aging in French oak, planting ungrafted vines, and so on... Today, Luis Pato has 60 hectares of vineyards on sandy and loamy-calcareous soils south and west of Sangalhos. “For us, producing wine is not only a passion, but also a pleasure.”
